Turkey denies air defense vulnerability after Black Sea drone shootdown

(MENAFN) The Turkish Defense Ministry on Thursday rejected claims that the country’s air defense systems are vulnerable, following the shooting down of a drone over the Black Sea.

“The process was managed successfully and brought to a conclusion. Claims that our air defense system is vulnerable do not reflect the truth,” the ministry said, adding that the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was “broken into very small pieces and scattered over a wide area,” making it difficult to identify wreckage with structural integrity on the ground.

The ministry emphasized that control of Türkiye’s airspace is maintained “on a 24/7 basis through a layered and integrated architecture encompassing radar, early warning, electronic warfare, and interception elements.”

Amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the ministry noted that relevant parties had been warned to exercise caution to prevent incidents that could threaten security in the Black Sea.

The incident occurred after a drone was detected approaching Turkish airspace over the Black Sea and was determined to be out of control. The ministry said the object was monitored in line with established procedures, and NATO-assigned and nationally controlled F-16 aircraft were dispatched on an alert response mission.

After assessing that the aerial object was an uncontrolled drone, it “was shot down in a secure area outside residential zones in order to prevent any potential harm,” according to the ministry’s statement on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal.
